Summary of Stay: I have stayed at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn five times before and every time I am impressed with it’s consistency. They have a talent of making a trip or getaway into an unforgettable memory. The resort is an oasis for relaxation.

This historic hotel was originally built in the late 1800s but burnt down in 1923. This hotel was built on the site of the Boyes Hot Springs. A larger hotel was rebuilt in 1927 in the Spanish mission style. Sadly, the hotel fell into receivership during the Great Depression and remained closed until 1933. Since then it has undergone numerous renovations to revive the hotel back to it’s former bright pink glory. The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn is also a member of the Historic Hotels of America.

On our latest stay, as we drove up the keyhole driveway to the valet, we could not help but notice the line-up of Teslas in the drive. The hotel offers free parking to hybrid vehicles as part of it’s Green Partnership Program. As we walked to the lobby and past their lawns, I noticed signs that said “Brown is the New Green” and that they were watering their grass less because of the California drought. The hotel is clearly dedicated to the environment and it was nice to see.

Check in was quick and easy and the front desk attendant was fun and welcoming. Because we were staying at the hotel over a holiday they suggested that we speak with the concierge team to make dining reservations. The concierges did a great job of coordinating everything for us for our stay.

I had booked a Wine Country Junior Suite and had a beautiful patio that looked out over the gardens. The suite was spacious, comfortable and in pristine condition. It had everything I would want in a suite: generous seating area, jacuzzi tub, spa shower, mini bar, big flat screen television and fireplace. I have also stayed in the Mission Suite, which is nice, but I much prefer the Junior Suites for the layout.

Dining at the hotel is a bit of a treat. My friends raved daily about the room service (Lemon pancakes are to die for). North 38 is a relaxed atmosphere for a casual dinner or just a glass of wine. The hotel offers a complimentary wine hour with local wines alongside a variety of cheese pairings at a cost. The cheeses were exceptional and worth every penny. Sante is the formal dining option at the hotel and has won both AAA 4 Diamond and Michelin star designations.

Highlight of the Hotel: The Spa is an exceptional destination on its own. It has regularly been ranked one of the top 10 spas in America and rightfully so. The 40,000 sq foot spa facility sits atop the Boyes thermal springs which is said to have healing properties. The mineral water has lead to their unique bathing ritual that includes several thermal soaks, a eucalyptus steam and cool plunge showers. I’ve had 6 massages at the spa over the years and they have been excellent except one. The spa also offers watsu massage—an in-water massage that takes place in one of the thermal pools. Other signature experiences include the Sonoma Lavender Facial, the Wine-Country Recovery and the Chardonnay Olive Oil Body Scrub. If you are planning to visit, be sure to check out their monthly special and remember that Fairmont Presidents club members get a discount on spa services.

Highlight of the Stay: The hotel does everything it can do to help its’ guests relax. The spa is wonderful and I make it my main priority during each stay. There is a welcome bottle of wine in your room to help you unwind. There is a gentle hint of woodsmoke in the air from the multiple fire-pits throughout the property. Every twenty steps or so you can hear the gentle streaming of water from one of the numerous water features around the property. Even the signature apricot toiletries (which they discontinued using but if you request it, they will supply) have a marvelous relaxing perfume. Furthermore, if you want to go into town, just ask the valet for a drive so you don’t have to worry about driving or getting a taxi. One less thing to worry about.

Drawbacks: If you are staying in one of the suites, they are sprinkled around the resort and finding them is often like working through a maze. Especially if you’ve had a glass or wine of two. Beyond that, the outdoor heated pool was sadly too cold for us to use in the winter months.

Summary of Stay: The Bellagio is a landmark in Vegas and rightfully so. I’ve stayed at this hotel more than a dozen times and during each stay I find yet another thing that impresses me. But let’s start from the beginning.

As your vehicle pulls up along Las Vegas Boulevard, it’s impossible not to be taken in by the 8 acre fountain lagoon. In action, these fountains have literally stopped traffic as tourists want to take in the largest free show along the strip. With over 1200 nozzles, 450 lights and synchronized to various famous pieces of music, the fountains hit heights of over 450 feet.

When you pull up to the main entrance, you notice the large bank of doors that leads to the nearly 4000 rooms inside. Through the doors it is impossible not to have your breath taken away by the 2000 hand-blown glass flowers, by famed artist Chihuly, that adorn the ceiling. The vivid colors and intricate lines draw your eye upwards and past the lobby to the sun-soaked conservatory. The conservatory hosts seasonal floral displays of the grandest scale. Animatronic parts, waterfalls, larger than life animals completely made of flowers can be found in their often changing exhibits.

Because I treat gambling like a sport, I can bypass the check-in lines and go to the ‘Invited-Guests Only’ check in attendants. Unless you are staying at a 5 star boutique hotel in Vegas, you’ll likely have to wait in a line. But don’t worry - they move quickly and there is usually a half dozen attendants or more working to get guests quickly checked in.

There are a variety of room choices at the Bellagio - from private villas and presidential suites to resort and fountain view deluxe rooms. I generally get a Salone suite - which has a tasteful living area and an expanded bathroom with a tub that has a floor to ceiling window. This suite is roughly 850 sq feet and have varying views. The rooms live up to the 5 star standard and you notice it everywhere from the plushness of the towels to the stunning wall paper to the impeccable cleanliness. In 2011, the hotel spent more than $70 million on upgrading the rooms of the main tower, but honestly, the rooms have always been pristine when I’ve visited.

The Bellagio resort has an incredible pool facility for it’s guests. Towering cypress trees line opulent pools that looks like Venus designed them herself. Though the pool area can get busy and loud on weekends during summer, the rest of the time you’ll have no issue finding a pool chair and relaxing. If you plan to spend a day poolside, I highly recommend booking a cabana for added comfort and privacy. Not far from the pool is the Spa - which I have heard good things about but have yet to try.

I have heard people ask why they should spend much money on a hotel in Las Vegas when they are barely in the room. Well there are several important factors to consider. The hotels in Vegas are actually the main attraction. If you want to stay at a non-descript inn down the road you can, but you’ll be envious of the glamour and appeal and luxury of these hotels. And if you plan to spend very little time in the room, you better be somewhere you can rest perfectly and sleep well. Lower budget hotels aren’t going to have black out curtains, perfect air conditioning, sound-proof rooms and 24 hour room service. Finally most people go to Vegas for an average of 3-4 nights so splurge. Live the high life and treat yourself in a city that knows how to take care of it’s guests.

The Bellagio has some interesting history. It was originally conceived and built by famous hotelier Steve Wynn and was designed after Lake Como town in Italy. The property sits on the original site of the Dunes hotel - but after it was demolished and with a budget of $1.6 Billion, the Bellagio became the most expensive hotel in history when it opened in 1998. Two years later, Steve Wynn sold his company, Mirage Resorts (which owned The Mirage, The Bellagio, Treasure Island, Golden Nugget, 50% of Monte Carlo, and more) to MGM Grand Inc. for almost $6.4 Billion. Wynn went on to build a series of namesake hotels including the Wynn and Encore Las Vegas and the Wynn and Encore Macau. Steve Wynn is currently working on his third installment in Macau, the Wynn Palace opening in 2016 and Wynn Boston Harbour in 2018.

Highlight of the Hotel: One thing most visitors to Vegas complain about is how much walking they do. Hotels are built on such a grand scale that they actually look closer than they are. One trip I averaged 22 kms/day from walking around casually on the strip. The Bellagio is housed perfectly in the middle of the strip and across the street from Caesars Palace and their Forum Shops, and also adjoined to the City Centre complex via monorail. Whether down the immensely long hallways or half down the strip, you will be walking a lot. So take my advice and spend a premium to be close to the action.

Highlight of the Stay: The hotel is a mecca for all things entertainment. It houses the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art which regularly updates its exhibits. Here you find  world class art from Picasso to Warhol, Faberge eggs to modern sculptures. The casino floor is massive but it also offers something for everyone. Although minimum bids at the tables are often higher than other casinos, the dealers are entertaining and charming and make it worth the premium. ‘O’ by Cirque du Soleil is still one of the hottest shows on the strip and is certainly one of my Top 3. Dining at the hotel is an attraction in itself with restaurants like Michael Mina (see review under Eats + Drinks), Le Cirque, Olives, Jasmines and the 2 Michelin starred Picasso. If you are looking for something more casual the Bellagio Cafe is a personal favourite but the Buffet is one of the best in the city. If you are looking for something more lively, there are several swanky cocktail bars, but the real jackpot is the two headlining ultralounges: Hyde and The Bank. Both venues are celebrity magnets and attract a sexy monied crowd. Dress codes at both are strictly enforced.

Drawbacks: Vegas can be a busy place and Bellagio is certainly one of the main hubs. While I love staying here, if you are looking for something low key, quiet and relaxing, I would likely pick another destination. Bellagio provides a romantic and whimsical place to stay while being in the heart of all the best the city has to offer.

Summary of Stay: I had a 25 hour layover on an Iceland Air flight - an attempt to get people to visit Iceland which actually works. So in my researching I was looking for a hotel near the airport, Reykjavik and the hot springs. The Blue Lagoon Clinic Hotel is one of the few luxury hotels on the island and it was the only one with the proximity I was looking for.
At first the name threw me off - Clinic Hotel sounds like a fabulous destination you stay when you go to get a face lift or tummy tuck. But it is named the Clinic Hotel because of the spa and the healing qualities of the geothermal pools. The water is rich in sulphur (not the most pleasant smell but you don’t notice it after a few minutes) and lined with silica mud. The lava field pools are known to help many skin conditions but namely psoriasis. But be warned, sulphur can damage hair so condition heavily before and after the hot springs.

Couple of things to know about the destination - it is about half hour away drive from Reykjavik. Iceland requires a vehicle to properly enjoy. I read about the transfers that go from the airport to Reykjavik and even to the Blue Lagoon but just get a car. They are inexpensive, the roads are great and things are relatively easy to find. Secondly - there is no entertainment at the hotel so come prepared with a book and the need to relax.

Just for clarity - there is a huge thermal pool complex that tourists visit that is a 10 minute walk from the hotel and guests have free access to it at certain times of the day. This complex has a restaurant - Lava, lounge, cafe and gift shop. It is a nice modern facility but it is busy and is one of the main tourist attractions of Iceland. But if you’re staying at the hotel, the only real reason to walk over to this complex is if you are hungry. I went to Lava for lunch - it is a beautiful room with exquisite food. However, I was the only one in the restaurant that wasn’t in a bathrobe. I’m not sure if the scene is different for dinner but I have to say it kinda ruined the experience.

But lets not get ahead of ourselves. The Blue Lagoon Clinic Hotel is small - with only 35 rooms. Self parking is easy and close. Check in was a breeze and I had arrived late after an evening of shopping and dinner in Reykjavik. I asked the attendant if I could still go for a quick dip in the hotel’s private lagoon - and she said of course. It was bliss after a long day and a flight. And I had the pool to myself.

The room was extremely clean and minimalist. It was flooded in light with floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the lava fields. Everything was very comfortable and the bathroom had a massive shower. Other than that, the room was rather nondescript.

The common areas of the hotel continue with their Icelandic simplicity. Comfy chairs with blankets dot the lounge with views of the lagoon or the fireplaces. I'm certain that there isn't a better place on the island to curl up with a book. There is a gym and yoga studio and a refreshment bar that serves breakfast in the morning but you can get a drink throughout the day. 

Highlight of the Hotel: You stay at this hotel for it’s access to the private geothermal pools - and they do not disappoint. 2 out of the 3 times in the pool, I had the expansive springs to myself. They have a supplies of silica mud that you can mask your body with and you can also enter the pool from indoors if the weather is cold. There are several different areas of the private lagoon so if you are looking for privacy or just a place to float undisturbed, it won’t be difficult to find. You can easily spend hours in the perfectly heated pools.

The changing rooms are very spacious and have everything you could need. And remember to condition!

Highlight of the Stay: I’m a spa fan so when I was reading about the different services that was offered at the Blue Lagoon I was most interested in the in-water massage. As it was winter, it was still very dark out and the heat rose off the lagoon in a very mystical way. My therapist was Ilsa and I booked the earliest appointment that they had which was at 9 am. She met me in the pool and asked me to float on my back as she placed a short pool noodle under my knees. She cradled my head in her hands and proceeded to give me one of the best back massages ever. The water relaxes you and gazing up, the northern lights put me in a trance. Ilsa moved the pool noodle behind my neck and began to work on my legs and feet. For the entire hour in the pool, we were the only ones there and she actually roped off a section of the pool just for my treatment.

One thing to be aware of - I had reserved the treatment months in advance and the hotel originally booked me down at the main tourist complex. When I checked in they reminded me and told me it was down there. I had assumed that it would have been at my hotel - and they were able to have it changed up to the hotel’s private pool. I would very highly recommend for the ultimate in privacy and relaxation. So be very clear when you make your reservation.

Drawbacks: I had a wonderful stay at the Blue Lagoon Clinic Hotel but there are a few things they could improve on. The bathrooms really need heated floors. I was there in the winter but when I first stepped on the slate floors in the bathroom in the morning, I nearly had a heart attack. Secondly they need to invest better bed linens - there is a duvet (which is great) but then a scratchy comforter over it. Your first impression of the bed when you first walk in is that it looks like a lumpy overstuffed mattress. I like a comfortable and nice looking bed. Finally, the reservation process it a bit of a headache. You can’t reserve on their website - you have to send a reservation request via email and wait for a reply back which took a few days. I actually had to make a phone call because I hadn’t received a reply. But if you want exclusivity and tranquility, these are minor issues of a really amazing hotel.

Summary of Stay: I spent a few nights at the Copley Plaza after a break in Cape Cod. Instantly you'll be charmed by the grandeur of walking down Peacock Alley and into the spacious lobby. The hotel originally opened in 1912 and went through a $20 million face-lift on its 100th anniversary. 

I was upgraded to a Signature Room that I found spacious and relaxing, modern yet keeping with the classic charm of the hotel. You can tell that a great deal of thought has been put into the renovation of the rooms.  The bed was heavenly. The bathroom was spacious with stunning marble and a spacious shower. However the bathroom toiletries were basic Nicole Miller and a bit disappointing.

The location of the hotel is ideal whether you're in town on business, wanting to hit the shops or wanting to take in the sights. Boston is a very walkable city and the hotel is conveniently located in the Back Bay area. 

Other perks of the hotel include a rooftop health club and deck. There is a Fairmont Gold floor which I did not see. The hotel also houses a secret supper club, 140 Supper Club, that holds special dining experiences that require a special password for entrance. Slightly less exclusive is OAK Long Bar + Kitchen which I had an incredible brunch at. 

Highlight of the Hotel: The hotel's lobby is exquisite and it transports you back to an ultra glamorous time and place. New York's Plaza Hotel is this hotel's sister property having been designed by the same architect. With over 5000 square feet adorned with gilded ceilings, crystal chandeliers and Italian marble, the lobby is stunning first impression that never gets old.

Highlight of the Stay: OAK Bar + Kitchen is an excellent stop for great eats.  Cocktails are of the highest quality and their bartenders are the best in the city. While evenings can be crowded and lively, lunches are filled with powerbrokers and businessmen. My favourite meal there was brunch and I still remember the breakfast Mac & Cheese that I devoured. 

Drawbacks: Before my stay, I had a few issues with getting replies from the concierges. It finally took an angry call to the front desk and then I finally got replies back. Unfortunately the concierge team was not able to help me coordinate the travel details or tickets I had requested. I also asked what my options were for baseball tickets and they suggested I just search online. Not the level of service I had expected.

The other drawback is that this hotel is a landmark and a popular tourist destination. I encountered 3 weddings while I was there - and that required having to fight crowds in the lobby regularly.

Summary of Stay: I spent four blissful nights here at this Mexican Oasis which boasts the AAA 5 Diamond Award. The hotel opened in 2015 and has been a magnet for celebrities and the well traveled. Just ten minutes from the hustle and excitement of Puerto Vallarta is the Hotel Mousai. Mousai is part of the larger Garza Blanca Preserve Resort complex and therefore have access to extended amenities. The Hotel Mousai has a total of 62 rooms - all with stunning ocean views, private plunge pools/jacuzzis on their balconies, impressive finishings and spacious suites. The hotel has all the basics including 24 hour room service, concierge, valet, etc but also a doctor on call 24 hours, tennis/squash/basketball courts, world class spa, cigar lounge, gym with a personal trainer and the most impressive infinity pool in the area. Hotel guests have access to a VIP beach area at Garza Blanca resort which staff will arrange a golf cart to get you to and from. Each hotel suite has an iPad which controls lighting, temperature, and the television - but it also goes a step further and allows guests to order room service, excursions, make dinner reservations, and much more. The rooms are beautiful appointed with dramatic bathrooms with backlight orange onyx, impressive amounts of closet space, comfortable sitting room, and a bed that will be hard to get out of in the morning. The oversized balcony comes with a hammock, sofa, chaise and your private pool/jacuzzi. Each morning I had my room service breakfast out on the balcony overlooking the turquoise ocean. Also lots of little touches along the way as well including ‘welcome’ chocolates, beach bag with flip flops and towels, high quality robes, and generous toiletries.

Another thing that stands out at this hotel is the friendliness of the staff. Because of the properties small room count, you’ll be instantly greeted by name and with a genuine smile. The staff really do try to get to know their guests and at the poolside lounge, the waitress knew my order and it was promptly served to me. Touches like this go a long way.

Another benefit of this hotel is the fact that they do both all-inclusive and european plans. Both obviously have their advantage but in a resort town like Puerto Vallarta it is nice to be able to have a choice for what works best for your needs. While I did not dine at Hiroshi, I heard other guests rave about their food.

Highlight of the Hotel: The Rooftop infinity pool is reason enough to visit this property. It is a balance of relaxing, hip and sexy. The all white furniture is a striking contrast to the beautiful royal blue pool and ocean. In the mornings the pool is quiet and on 2 occasions had the area all to myself. As the afternoon approaches, the pool bar hosts live musicians and the chairs begin to fill up with sexy globetrotters who drink tropical blended drinks and soak up the scorching sun. By evening, the vibe becomes very hip with chic lighting and loungey music. Guests will huddle around the bar socializing with the bartenders or find a quiet corner for a romantic cocktail. It really is the jewel of the hotel.

Highlight of the Stay: The Spa at Hotel Mousai really is impressive. I had a few massages and a pedicure at the spa. The space is pure nirvana and especially perfect for couples. They have a hydra-therapy circuit which I did twice and it really does leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed. Both massages I had were incredible and the treatment rooms are all different and special. My room had a floor to ceiling windows overlooking the ocean. One treatment room for couples even has a romantic jacuzzi with an unparalleled view of Los Arcos.

Drawbacks: My stay was nearly perfect. If you’re looking to be in the middle of all the action, Hotel Mousai is not. It is about an $8US tax ride into the heart of Puerto Vallarta. However, the quiet and relaxing nature at the hotel was the very reason I came. Besides that, I only received turn-down service twice out of the 4 nights.

Summary of Stay: The Baray Villas are a luxurious oasis tucked away in Kata Beach. At first I was a little unsure about booking a hotel on an island that wasn’t beachfront. After reading other reviews and doing my own research, my lack of certainty was quickly replaced with excitement.

The hotel has a total of 14 villas and is part of the Sawasdee Village Resort. Sawasdee Village has a total of 40 guest suites so the entire hotel has a boutique feel. Upon arrival you are greeted with a cool glass of guava juice and jasmine scented iced towels as you check in. The hotel is a calm oasis where you can lose yourself in the multiple pools, waterfalls, shrines, ponds and gardens.

As I was escorted to my villa, I could not get past how quiet and serene the resort is. Inside - I was amazed at the vastness of the villas. Perhaps because I was travelling alone but I really was floored by the sheer size of the villa. With over 1600 sq feet of living space, not including the outside areas, there is room to spare. The villa is marble from end to end and very well appointed with oversized furniture. The hotels aesthetic balances between authentic Thai and Arabian. Up the stairs is the bedroom and master bath. And by master, I mean epic. The bathroom was easily the largest I’ve ever had in a hotel with a large floating marble bathtub in the middle. The bedroom comes equipped with it’s own private living area and flat screen tv and Apple McMini which doubles the tv as a computer. Back downstairs, is another full bathroom with an outdoor shower. Next, the living room was magnificient with it’s lofted ceilings. The sectional couch was perfect to curl up and nap after a long afternoon in the sun. A few feet away the marble turns into steps to your personal jacuzzi tub. Open up the doors at the end of the jacuzzi and swim into your own personal grotto steps from your suite. And if that isn’t big enough for you, open up your personal gate and swim out into the immense lagoon down to the waterfalls or the other direction to the swim up bar. The lagoon is a private area only for guests of the villas. The villas offer the utmost in privacy and luxury and ease of relaxation.

On site you have limited dining options. The restaurant Al Majlis is used as the breakfast buffet which serves both full western and asian breakfasts in their buffet. In the afternoon, you can take Thai cooking classes - which I did - and you can select which dishes you’d like to learn. The day that I selected the cooking classes, I was the only participant and I had the undivided attention of 2 chefs teaching me the craft. In the evening, the restaurant serves traditional Thai dishes in its warm and elegant setting. Room service is quick and beautifully presented. However, a five minute walk will put you on the main street of Kata beach and provide you with dozens of dining options.

Highlight of the Hotel: I’m a fan of pools and what could possibly be better than a villa with direct pool access from the inside of your suite?

Highlight of the Stay: The Baray Spa is something that dreams are made of. Tucked into a corner of the hotel, the spa has a variety of spa packages that would appeal to even the most discerning traveller. I settled on the 3 hour Baray Bliss - which was expensive for Thailand but cheap compared to any western spa of this calibre. My treatment included a steam and floral bath, private outdoor shower, body scrub, massage and a facial. The facilities had a Buddhist theme and were beautifully appointed. My three hour package was approximately $120 USD. I suggest booking early as the spa is small and books up quickly.

Drawbacks: Many people want to be close to the downtown and the famous nightlife of Phuket. Baray Villas is meant to be a quiet and private retreat away from the craziness of Phuket town. However, if you want to hit the bars, expect a $10 US taxi or maybe $2 US bus.

Summary of Stay: I specifically handpicked this hotel after my first hotel experience in Sydney was disappointing. I wanted to ensure that this stay would end my Australian holiday on a high note and I got exactly what I was hoping for. If you are young, stylish and monied, The Darling is the place for you. Even though it’s only been open a few years, the hotel has won a collection of awards including most recently the International Five Star Hotel Standard.

The staff are young and attractive and are the perfect fit for this hip modern hotel. Upon arrival you’re welcomed by a group of attentive staff. Porters will assist with luggage, the valet will greet you and the doorman will walk you in directly to the front desk. The lobby is more of an art installation than a place to conduct business.

Check-in was a breeze and before I went to my room, I was introduced to the head concierge who inquired about how he could make my stay memorable. I told him that I was a bit of a foodie and his eyes lit up. Seeing his eagerness, I mentioned that I had tried but wasn’t able to get a reservation for Nomad, the hottest restaurant in Sydney at the time. A flash of panic and excitement blazed across his eyes. He asked me to leave it with him.

Up to my room with the porter and I was welcomed to a warm and bright room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the pool and the rest of the STAR complex. Everything was new and shiny and there was an overabundance of lighting. The bathroom had an open concept sink and mirror area with a private room for the toilet and another private room which housed the shower, both behind blacked out glass. The toiletries were exclusive Molton Brown products that were to my taste.

Connected to the hotel is the STAR complex; a multi-entertainment complex that includes an international shopping mall with stores like Gucci and Ferragamo, high end food court and top restaurants, the Lyric Theatre, several clubs, lounges and a casino. During my stay, I took in a show at the Lyric Theatre, played at the casino and ate at several of the restaurants. The most notable restaurant was Momofuku Seiobo which is overwhelmed with culinary accolades.

The hotel has a full spa which I did not have time to enjoy but which had a variety of treatments, many of which were original and intriguing. The hotel does also have it’s own pool - which never seemed busy. I did not see a gym but I believe that guests have access to a gym offsite.

Highlight of the Hotel: Attention to detail. The pool is installed with underwater speakers and is infused with white tea and eucalyptus. The room has several lighting options including one dedicated to the consumption of martinis. Toiletries are exclusive to the hotel and were refreshing. My room had a bowl of candy which was refreshed daily. Electronic blackout blinds ensured you could get your beauty rest after a wild night out on the town.

Highlight of the Stay: The concierge came through for me and was able to get me a coveted reservation at Nomad. The concierge team also assisted in helping me select a Hunter Valley vineyard tour and provided several options including a private car and driver that they had personally used to rave reviews. I also had a tuxedo custom made in Australia that unfortunately was not able to be completed before I left. The concierge team, who was expecting the tuxedo to be delivered to them, offered to make arrangements to have it shipped home to me if required. The staff went above and beyond to ensure I was well looked after.

Drawbacks: The hotel is located approximately ten minutes from the CBD (Central Business District) and a bit further to the main nightlife and shopping of Oxford Street. However, that is a small price to pay when taxis are readily available and inexpensive.

Summary of Stay: It’s been a long time I’ve had a hotel stay that has been this satisfying. From arrival and being ‘leigh-ed’ and offered a refreshing pineapple scented towel and mango drink to having the staff address me by name on the first day, the Kea Lani exceeded all expectations. The staff are noticeably more friendly than at other Wailea hotels I have visited. Another benefit is that all rooms are suites - separate bedrooms, large balconies, mini kitchenettes, massive washrooms, and state-of-the-art entertainment centre. The hotel also offers several wonderful dining options - from fine dining at KO to more relaxed fare poolside or at their bistro. Considering the calibre of the resort, dining was relatively inexpensive. The pool area - both family pools and slide as well as an adult only pool, are both very well maintained and serviced. But if the pool isn’t your thing, hit their beach which is quiet and clean. The hotel is an unassuming gem in Wailea for those with discerning tastes.

Highlight of the room: It is all about the small touches. From the welcome ammenity waiting for me in the room to returning to the room with charming Hawaiian music softly playing in the background. The room is appointed with the ultimate in comfort in mind.

Highlight of the hotel: The pool areas at the Kea Lani are a magical place. While some could argue that the Grand Wailea has more opulent facilities, you also need to tolerate screaming children, wear wrist bands, and deal with guests who are looking to party, drink and go wild. The Kea Lani is a place of relaxation. While usually my tolerance for children is usually on the short end, we continued to spend most of our time at the family pools and slide. Even the children were well behaved and orderly while having fun. The pool staff took extra care in looking after me and my guests. One of the best perks was the pineapple scented cool towels and fresh pineapple served to guests while enjoying the sun. Plus for a very special treat, book a villa and get your very own private hot tub.

Highlight of the stay: The Hawaiian canoe experience, which is a complimentary perk at the hotel, will be a memory that I’ll always remember. Out on the water, we got an education in Hawaiian culture and got to see whales breeching. Great guides and my only complaint was that the experience did not last longer. A definite must-do.

Drawbacks: The resort is an expensive treat, though worth every penny. Because of the location, a car is a must have - though this can be said of all of Maui.

Summary of Stay: Iconic hotel in an ideal location in New York City. Since a portion of the hotel was converted into condos, the hotel seems to have a smaller boutique feeling. Even though the grand lobby and check-in desk are less glamorous than I was lead to believe from movies and photo shoots, the hotel is still very well appointed. Rooms are luxurious and very well appointed especially since the hotel underwent a multi-million dollar restoration a few years back. The location of the hotel is across the street from world class shopping, attractions and tour bus stops. Finally - the service here is unmatched: each floor has their own butler service, check-in staff are friendly and accommodating, and the concierges are top notch. All of their recommendations were better than promised.

Each time I've stayed at the hotel, I've been impressed with the rooms: multiple windows, oversized bathrooms, butler's pantries, and rich decor. The bedding and linens are top notch. But don't expect much for views from your room since the best views are mostly allocated to the condos facing the park.

Room service was incredible and the taste was rivalled by it's presentation. Old school service at it's very best. We also had afternoon tea at the Palm Court; touristy but also a NYC luxury. The Palm Court transports you back to the historical brilliance and this hotel's reputation was built upon. 

Highlight of the Room: The in-room iPad that allows you to access the internet, make reservations, order room service, and manage in room controls. Nice touch - especially for travellers who do not want to pack their own laptops.

Highlight of the Hotel: The service really sets this hotel apart from many others. From the consideration to sending up a piece of birthday cake and a bottle of wine to driving us in the hotel’s limo to Rockefeller Centre, to arranging impossible dinner reservations, the hotel ensures that it looks after its’ guests. The Plaza is professionally managed by Fairmont Hotels.

Highlight of the Stay: Tea at the Palm Court really was worth every penny. Having taken high tea at several notable addresses, the Palm Court delivers. Notably - the servers are very professional and personable. Reservations are highly recommended and is a great idea for anyone, even if not staying at the hotel.

Drawbacks: While the hotel has five doors that open out onto Fifth avenue, they only keep one open. This causes large bottlenecks to get into and out of the hotel. Because the hotel is a tourist attraction, the hotel tries to keep tourists from getting past the main lobby. Daily we’d have to show our room keys in order to just get to the elevators, where the keys were again required to operate the elevator. Also - the taxi line is terribly busy because tourists find it handy. The hotel should designate one door/entrance for hotel guests only as well as a separate taxi line for paying guests.

Summary of Stay: This legendary hotel sits in the heart of London. Some of my favourite shops are mere steps away. Unlike other notable hotels that attract tourists to visit their lobby, the Ritz moved it’s main entrance from Piccadilly to Arlington Street and consequently reduced the crowds. The hotel gives an inviting and elegant feel as you walk through the doors. The staff anticipate your needs and ensure that everything is perfectly looked after. A nice touch was having my Front Desk attendant personally take me up to my room and give me a tour of the common facilities. The rest of the staff knew my name the day I checked in. By the time I left, the concierges felt more like family than staff. Considering the hotel staff outnumber the hotel suites 2:1, you know that you’ll be well looked after.

Dining is taken to a new level at the Ritz. Afternoon tea is a must - which was the first hotel to allow unchaperoned women to attend tea. It books months in advance and rightfully so; the Palm Court in the Ritz redefined tea for London society. The Ritz restaurant serves a beautifully orchestrated breakfast to guests in the morning and turns around is a dining hotspot in the evening along with live music. The Rivoli Bar specializes in vintage cocktails in a very intimate setting. The Ritz London was the first hotel to receive the Royal Warrant from the Prince of Wales for a banqueting and catering services.

My suite was very well appointed in Louis XVI style and was one of the largest rooms I’ve ever had in all of Europe. Lovely fireplace, king sized bed, two sitting areas and plenty of closet space. The bathroom was very spacious with nothing overlooked. Heated floors and towel racks, plush towels, Asprey toiletries and the signature white Ritz rose - a breed specifically grown for the hotel and flown in weekly from the Netherlands. The room could not have been more comfortable - from the natural light to the quality of the bed linens.

Another nice perk of the hotel is access to the Ritz Club - London’s most exclusive member’s only gaming club. Think Monte Carlo meets Mayfair - the Ritz Club is the place to be seen.

Highlight of the Hotel: The room was one of the largest I have been in throughout Europe. My specific room overlooked Piccadilly through French doors while 2 other large windows let in additional light. The high ceilings and warm peach colours made the room spacious and comfortable. There was a seasonal plant in a 'Ritz' planter - also a nice touch.

Highlight of the Stay: Tea at the Ritz really is something to take in. Besides the generous portions of delicate sandwiches to the scrumptious scones (my personal favourite), the ambiance of the Palm Court will transport you back to 1906 and all the grandeur its original guests would have felt. Drawbacks: The only drawback I can think of from my stay comes with the nightly turn-down service. The room attendant turns on the television to an annoying looping advertisement for the jewelry store in the lobby. Did this affect my stay? No. But coming back to my room after a night out, turning off the commercial was the very first thing I did.

Summary of Stay: I had been staying on the other end of Malta and wasn’t keen on my resort. So I knew that I liked St. Julian’s and went ahead and booked another hotel for the rest of my stay. The Marina Hotel was a great escape. Perfectly located, very clean, quiet and beautiful views. Rooms are very comfortable and relaxing but not luxurious. However, the hotel is still very good value.

Dining is where the hotel excels at - 11 venues for you to dine, whether at the pool or in a formal atmosphere. Most of the restaurants have spectacular views of the sea and all the dining experiences I had were relaxing and satisfying.

Highlight of the Hotel: The location and the views from the room. The hotel is very central with lots of options for dining and shopping within walking distance. And after being isolated at my last resort, I really appreciated the benefit of being close to shops, restaurants and nightclubs. In regards to views, all rooms have a seaside view. I had a Superior Sea View Room which overlooked St. Julian’s bay. The hotel has 2 different view categories - Superior and Deluxe. Superior overlooks the bay and you can watch the beachgoers and the ships come in and out. The Deluxe view is of the Mediterranean and far less busy, but also less interesting. I would not pay extra for the Deluxe view.

Highlight of the Stay: I made good use of the hotel’s recreational facilities. They have a fully equipped gym for those who need to maintain their beach body. While I did not use the spa, I heard guests compliment the various services they had tried. I spent most of my time by the pools and soaked up the subtropical heat. Pool chairs were plentiful, the area was well attended and it was certainly much more relaxing than the crowded beach yards away.

Drawbacks: This resort has so much potential. Great location and stunning views. It has all the infrastructure of a 5 star resort but it just comes up short. While I enjoyed my time at the hotel, I wish the hotel would invest more money in the property to take it to the next level.

Summary of Stay: The Dolce Sitges is the only 5 star property in Sitges - and knowing that, I was able to get an unreal deal on Hotwire.com. The hotel is fresh, relaxing and aesthetically interesting and huge. 263 rooms make up the property - so to go from the lobby to my room was a fifteen minute walk that required 2 elevator rides. Accept the assistance of the staff. Once you’ve gotten accustomed with the hotel, it’s pretty easy to navigate.

The rooms are a bit plain. I had a deluxe room with ocean view and the balcony was huge and relatively private. The bed and linens were very high quality - but the room itself was comfortably boring as it tried to balance between being a luxury and practicality.

Highlight of the Hotel: The pools - and there are five of them - are the jewel of the hotel. Each pool has it’s own and therefore attract their own crowd. There are different seating options, plentiful umbrellas and attractive lifeguards. Service at the pool was also noticeably attentive. The other highlight was the custom cologne in the room - made exclusively for the Dolce Sitges. If they sold it in a gift shop, I assure you it would be a best seller.

Highlight of the Stay: While my meal at Restaurant Esmarris can be described only as adequate, my afternoon lunches at the Dolce Deli Bar totally made up for it. The food is relaxed, high quality, affordable and well portioned. Furthermore, the staff were very friendly and would make small talk and ask about whatever book I happened to be reading that day. They asked me questions about Canada and overall went above and beyond to ensure my stay was great. Not what I expected from the hotel deli.

Drawbacks: There are two main drawbacks for this property. It is slightly removed from the Sitges townsite and walking into town is not really an option. So be prepared to part with some euros to take the 10 minute taxi into town. And you will want to go into town - Sitges is a beautiful, colourful, energetic town. Secondly, while the Dolce Vital Spa is well designed, I had disappointing treatments and the common areas were not kept tidy throughout the day. Easy fixes for the hotel in the future.

Summary of Stay: Egypt is one of those exotic locations I wanted to visit since I was a little boy. It’s a country with fascinating history and culture that I think it is a must for all travellers to visit. That being said, I still wanted to visit Egypt with comfort as my priority. I booked with the Fairmont Nile City because of it’s location and luxury.

I began my correspondence with the hotel several weeks before arriving and they arranged transportation from the airport: Sir - please let us know which Mercedes in our fleet you’d like us to pick you up in. Nice start. Beyond that, they also arranged for VIP arrival service which allowed a local authority to look after my customs declaration and visa as I sat my jet-lagged self down in an air conditioned lounge with my bottle of water. They also informed me that my driver was waiting for me and he came into introduce himself. As I waited in the lounge, the driver came back to tell me that my Mercedes was blocking the Egyptian President’s motorcade and security was asking us to move. I thought it was best to agree to their request. Moments late the VIP host came back with my passport and said I was all finished. So as I walked out to the Benz, I walked past the Egyptian President and we said hello. Yes - I felt like a big deal.

The driver whisked us through Cairo - which is a huge city - in luxury. It was midnight and traffic moved quickly, apart from a camel or two. Upon arrival, my luggage and self were ran through a metal detector/x-ray machine and then taken over to the check-in. Days later I would learn that metal detectors are commonplace in Cairo. The lobby is impressive with statutes and massive arrangements of white roses that look sharp against the art deco marble flooring. Check-in was a breeze and I was asleep after a quick shower.

The Fairmont Gold room was beautifully appointed and I had a full view of the city. The room was spectacularly cleaned twice daily and I can’t think of one single flaw with the room. I sent several pieces of clothing for laundering and pressing and they were returned to me in pristine condition. The bathroom had a full glass window that looked into the bedroom which could have been been sexy if not traveling alone - but don’t fret, there were also shutters to it for those with less exhibitionist tendencies.

I also checked out the Willow Stream Spa at the hotel. The facilities are top notch and include a full gym and separate areas for men and women. I booked the 90 minute Hammam Heaven treatment which I thought was only satisfactory. I’ve had hammams before and I usually love them but this was pretty basic and I had far better spa services at other hotels in Cairo.

Highlight of the Hotel: The hotel boasts a few exceptional dining experiences. To begin with I was staying in a Fairmont Gold room and therefore had access to the Fairmont Gold lounge. Many of the large international brands have club floor lounges but they really need to take notes from the Fairmont Nile City. From the buffet breakfast and the attentiveness of the staff to the afternoon tea, to the evening cocktails, the Fairmont Gold lounge was exceptional and worth every extra penny I paid for the upgrade. The Champagne Bar and Onyx lounge were a great place to end or begin a night. Their bartenders were creative with cocktails and extremely knowledge about champagne, wine and spirits. On my last night of my stay, I went to Bab El Nil - the hotel’s trendy shisha bar and restaurant. It has a very young club lounge vibe and the food was among the best I had in Egypt. I ordered a variety of dishes and each was better than the next. Finally, their shisha menu was impressive and I highly recommend the jasmine flavour.

Highlight of the Stay: The concierge team assisted with all my travel needs within Egypt. They were honest and forthright when it came to security in certain regions of Egypt and strongly advised I change my plans. They arranged a guide for me for one day - the guide was so exceptional that I ended up hiring her for 2 additional days to show me around the city. She was an excellent suggestion. The concierge team was full of thoughtful suggestions that really made my stay in Cairo memorable. But I think it was their sincere concern for my safety that was impressive. It should also be stated that I believe Egypt is very tourist friendly but I was visiting at time of political instability and the staff clearly wanted to ensure I had a safe and enjoyable experience.

Drawbacks: The hotel has a rooftop pool with decent view of the Nile. However, the pool itself was just decent. It was too small for a hotel of this size and lacked being stylish or luxurious. The service at the pool was almost non-existent. Secondly, I suffered food poisoning from something I ordered from a room service hamburger (well done). However, when I notified the hotel they sent a doctor up to my room almost immediately to check on me. He prescribed me a few tablets which I was able to get at a pharmacy in the Nile City Corporate Complex which is connected to the hotel. Within 24 hours, I was back to normal.

Summary of Stay: At the time that I stayed at the hotel, it was the most expensive hotel that I had ever spent the night. So I think I came into the hotel with rather high expectations. The reason I initially stayed at the hotel was because of the location. It is the only hotel in Iguassu National Park in Brazil and guests have access to the falls before the crowds arrive. I had very limited time at Iguassu Falls, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, and wanted to stay at the hotel so I could enjoy the Falls as long as I could. Belmond, formerly Orient-Express, did a $20 million US dollar renovation on the property in 2010. The Portuguese-colonial styled hotel brings an authentic Brazilian feel and old world charm to it’s luxury.

Dining at the hotel was a delight. I had dinner at the Itaipu Restaurant - relaxing atmosphere, amazing food, and afterwards was invited to have drinks with one of the celebrity judges of Brazil’s version of ‘The Voice.’ The service was above par and I recommend a table overlooking the pool. Breakfast the next morning was equally good.

The rooms, while perhaps a bit on the small side, had a beautiful colonial finish with every modern convenience available. The bathrooms had beautiful rich tile work and I fell in love with their toiletries. The hand cream was made in Brazil and I tried (unsuccessfully) to track it down while in Brazil. Another nice touch in the room was your complimentary pair of Havaiana sandals - a staple requirement in Brazilian culture. I requested a larger size from room service and they gladly switched mine out for me.

This leads to the pool. After a beautiful dinner and a few drinks at the restaurant, I went back to my room and replied to emails and did some banking. But I found I still wasn’t tired. It was almost midnight and I went and slipped into my swimsuit and walked down to the pool. Knowing full well that the pool closed at 11pm, I was waiting for a staff member to ask me to vacate the pool area. But they did not - and instead I had the pool to myself and in the deep darkness of the rainforest, I floated in the pool illuminated by the stars above. It was magical. But if you try this on your own and the staff remind you that the pool closes at 11pm, don’t blame me. I took another quick dip in the morning before flying out to Rio. Very spacious pool with fountains and full gym.

Highlight of the Hotel: Location, location, location. In the morning I was able to have an early breakfast and get out on the trails of the Iguassa National Park as the sun was rising. I was literally the only person out there. I was able to walk along the pathways on the water all the way up to the base of the ‘Devil’s Throat’ falls. I was able to take incredible photos and have an almost spiritual experience. On my way back I passed 2 other couples that clearly had the same idea and we took a few photos for each other. It really is magical and only accessible before the park opens if you are staying at the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas.

Highlight of the Stay: I really did have limited time at the this hotel - however, it was incredible to have such relaxed luxury at such an amazing and remote location. From the moment you arrive to the moment you check out, the staff are professional, friendly and sometimes almost invisible. Glasses are refilled without you noticing. Your luggage arrives in your room before you do. Your checkout process will take only a moment and your driver will be waiting for you. The valet will hand you a bottle of branded water and wish you to visit the hotel again. Their overall service is casual, polished and utterly first class.

Drawbacks: I had a superior room at the hotel, and while very comfortable, it seemed a bit tight. Not enough closet space, no view worth mentioning, and a tad on the dark side. While I realize this is an older hotel and smaller rooms are common, I would likely pay to upgrade into something more spacious.

Summary of Stay: Arriving on New Years Eve with 3 friends to paint the town red. The welcome hosts checked us in quickly and ushered us to a counter with complimentary wine tasting and snacks. The lobby is fresh and hip and welcoming to guests.

I had an Andaz King Suite and my friends had Andaz View rooms. They were jealous of my room - how spacious it was with a huge entertaining space. The rooms all have views and mine was of the beautifully lit Sunset Boulevard. The spaces were all modern, minimalist and very clean. The welcome hosts checked in on us to ensure that everything was satisfactory with our rooms.

The staff were all very friendly, professional and attentive. The valet was quick and housekeeping efficient and invisible. There were many thoughtful details during the stay including a handwritten Happy New Years card and cookies on the nightstand.

The hotel also has a beautiful rooftop pool but it was too cool to use during our stay. But while up there, I noticed that even though the pool wasn’t being used, there was an attendant up there putting out towels for guests. The music was on and it would have been a very pleasant place to spend an afternoon.

With the Andaz’s location close to so many great musical venues, this hotel popular with rock stars including The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who and Blur. Little Richard lived here for over a decade and Jim Morrison called this hotel home until he was evicted. The hotel can be seen in the movies ‘Almost Famous’  and ‘This is Spinal Tap.’

Highlight of the Hotel: The rooms and suites are great and very spacious. My King Andaz Suite was perfect for entertaining. It was a corner suite with loads of windows and natural light. It included free mini-bar (non-alcoholic drinks) and snacks which we enjoyed either after a night out or before going out. There is a large bar-style table in the suites which is ideal for cocktails before heading out. Other nice points of the suites include 2 full washrooms, large closets, and tonnes of sitting space. My favourite was a chair-and-a-half in the bedroom facing the window. I curled up here and drank my morning coffee each day.

Highlight of the Stay: The nightly wine tasting and snack downstairs is a really nice touch. They had 6 California wines for us to choose from and they were very knowledgable about the wineries. It always seemed to coincide with when we were headed out - so we always stopped by. We got to meet some other cool guests and it all just had a great LA vibe. 

Drawbacks: The hotel is in West Hollywood, but like most of Los Angeles, and you will need a car to get around. Some hotels have better locations and are more walkable. But as mentioned, its LA and a car really is a necessity. Beyond that, the pool area does not have a hot tub, so it would have been nice if the pool was heated to a more realistic temperature in the winter.

Summary of Stay: While I will be the first to say I enjoy historic hotels, I’ll also be the first to admit that in the past I have shown loyalties to certain hotel chains and travel companies. That being said, Fairmont Hotels have always taken extremely good care of me and I in turn rewarded them with business. So I was looking forward to several stays with Fairmont in California on a recent trip including San Francisco, Sonoma and Santa Monica. This was to be my first time at the Santa Monica property - and clearly my last.  

After departing the Sonoma property I called the Miramar Hotel and confirmed my arrival time as the hotel chain guarantees my early check-in because of my loyalty status. They confirmed that it would not be a problem and they looked forward to seeing me. When I arrived, the bell staff were friendly and courteous. As I made my way to the Presidents Club check-in, I was totally ignored. Waiting and waiting as two young clerks joked with each other as I stood saddled down by LV luggage. As silly as it sounds in this day and age, I feel I often get ignored because of my age.  I stood patiently - and finally when I was greeted, I was told that my room would be ready momentarily. They suggested I have a drink by the pool and that they would come get me when it was available. After checking my email and having a glass of champagne by the pool, I noticed 45 minutes had elapsed, so I checked back at the front desk. Ignored again until they told me the room was still not ready yet.

I pleasantly left the desk and went over to the concierge desk. Here a lady in her fifties demonstrated everything a concierge shouldn’t be. She did not listen. She was not aware of what was going on. She did not know how to use the internet. She could not make a phone call - which after twenty minutes of investigation - was because her phone wasn’t working. I took out my international cell phone, dialled the number and made the reservations myself. What a waste of time.

By this time, I noticed I had been waiting for my room for over 2 hours and it was past regular check-in time. I went back to the front desk - my room was not ready and this time I was told that the guest had no checked out and they had no idea when that guest would be leaving. Their tone clearly said that the other guest is more important than I was - and I should just shut up and go away. At this time, I asked for a manager, who happened to be in a meeting. I walked to the lobby armchair - unloaded my shoulder bags - and dialed the hotel 1-800 reservation line and expressed my concern to the phone operator. She guaranteed me that she would look after it. Within 5 minutes, they called me back to the front desk saying the room was ready. Insert long pause. When I asked for the room keys, he said he couldn’t give them to me because a supervisor had not double checked my suite. Another 20 minute wait. I don’t know about you - but I don’t travel to great destinations so I can wait around in the hotel lobby. Finally, the front desk clerk, with the snottiest attitude imaginable, personally took me up to my tower suite. Upon entering the suite, he went on about how exceptional it was - all I could think was how tired and overpriced it was. After a few more sour events, I wrote a strongly worded email to the manager and the regional manager. I did get a call from the manager asking “Well - what do you want?” to which I replied “A respectful and relaxing stay.”

Three weeks later the regional manager finally called and apologized for everything. Needless to say, I cut my stay short and only spent the one disappointing night at the Miramar.

Highlight of the hotel: The location - perfect for exploring the pier, the beach or 3rd Street Promenade. It also has access to a private beach club that is a nice added perk. 

Highlight of the stay: After being treated so rudely by the majority of the staff, I had a better than average breakfast at Fig Restaurant on the property.

Drawbacks: Staff, customer service, accommodations, price and just about everything else. A simple apology could have erased a lot of wrong-doing but apparently the hotel does not seem to prioritize customer service.

Summary of Stay: While I was there on business, I had the opportunity to explore all the hotel had to offer. My appreciation for historic hotels drew me to the iconic ‘Pink Palace.’ Built in 1927, the hotel boasts all the services of a first class hotel including business services, gym, pool, shops and several dining options. Bell staff were quick to greet me and check-in was seamless. Upon entering the Garden View guestroom in the historic hotel tower, it lived up to everything I expected from my research online: exceptional linens, fresh banana bread, luxurious toiletries, and their signature pink Frette robes. This is when the stay began to unravel. The pool at the hotel is far too small and underwhelming. The beach area is cramped and not well serviced. I had two unpleasant dining incidences - one in a restaurant and one with room service. The concierge wasn’t very helpful in booking reservations and found I could do much more with my smart phone. And getting extra towels turned into a huge frustration. Finally - upon check out, another guest’s bar tab had been charged to my room. And while it was resolved by the hotel, it was inconvenient and something I have only encountered one other time in my travels.

Highlight of the hotel: As boring as it sounds, the highlight of the hotel was actually the bed. Perfectly luxurious with very fine sheets and comforter. It was hard to get out of bed in the morning just because it was so comfortable. After a day out in the sun or shopping or after a night of clubbing, this bed is the perfect haven.

Highlight of the stay: Is eating the fresh banana bread in the room a valid highlight? In all seriousness, it is ridiculously amazing.

Drawbacks: Some of the staff are incompetent and others have too much attitude. Avoid the restaurants and room service.
